Prayer for Peace
Art Smith
God of grace and love,
Here we are to pray for peace. Humbly we seek your wisdom and guidance as we get ready to ask. How do we even ask for peace? Where is there too much “peace” already that feels so good and comfortable in our privilege while it is injustice for others? Now in this moment, we look to your Holy Spirit for guidance.
We will come up with things. But beyond the words of this prayer, prepare our hearts, aside from the words we’re inclined to say. Help us pray. Help us long for your peace. But soften our hearts to listen to the peace prayers of others, especially to those marginalized (maybe even pushed out by our personal peace).
We thank you for the blessings of our faith, for the vulnerable strength of our community, and for all the wonderful movements where people are sincerely attempting to promote peace. Be with the church, not just as it prays and in places of prayer but in all that it does.
Grant us the wisdom to see beyond our differences, the compassion to embrace one another's perspectives, and the courage to risk really listening to others seeking peace. May the church be drawn down unexpected pathways of love and justice, reflecting the surprising teachings of your son, Jesus Christ.
Here we are Lord. We offer ourselves to you, as vessels for your divine purpose. May our steps be guided by your Holy Spirit. May we participate in bringing unity in diversity, harmony, and growth to your world. May we step into what appears difficult, only to find your natural intention for us. May we count it all joy.
As you were in the beginning, be with each of us, in each of our cells. Be with us now. Connect us through your Spirit. Let us feel with those suffering, with the marginalized. Bring light in the darkness, and peace where there is pain.
And teach us how to pray for peace.
In your holy name.
Amen.
