Prayer for Peace

Eternal God, sustainer of the universe.

Hear our prayer of confession.

We sit at tables laden with good food.

We sleep on comfortable beds.

Doctors are available—

We have emergency rooms.

We sit on overstuffed chairs,
in air-conditioned homes as we watch colored TV
where we see thousands dying from hunger and war.

Most of this takes place in countries
whose names we can’t pronounce,
and which we didn’t even know existed.

How do we pray for peace in a world like this?

Teach us,
O broken-hearted God,
how to let our hearts be broken.

Teach us how to love your world so much
that we are willing to give ourselves
for it beyond any giving we’ve ever known.

In the name of him who showed us what
true loving and true giving means.

Amen.
