The people of Haiti continue to grapple with severe violence and instability, especially in Port-au-Prince, where gangs have taken control of large sections of the city.
Apostle Art Smith shares an update about the tragic events and their impact on Community of Christ members and friends:
"The situation in Haiti is dire, with gangs controlling large sections of the country, particularly in the Port-au-Prince area.
Tragically, around December 9, a gang leader opened fire on residents of the Cité-Soleil neighborhood in Port-au-Prince, where Community of Christ has five congregations, killing at least 200 people, including relatives of Community of Christ members and leaders.
The ongoing violence has severely disrupted daily life. Travel and trade are heavily restricted, leaving many of our members and friends suffering from hunger due to food shortages and soaring prices. It has displaced many church families, forcing them to flee their homes in search of safety. Furthermore, the instability has impacted worship and gathering for Community of Christ members. For instance, Haiti Great North Mission Center has not received vital worship resources, including Sermon Helps, due to safety concerns. Worship for our members is a time of hope and gathering, providing much-needed spiritual support and community connection during these difficult times.
Haiti Mission Center Presidents Renel Louis Jean and Laner Lefort express their gratitude to Community of Christ members around the world for their continued prayers and generous support. Because of your contributions to Worldwide Mission Tithes, Community of Christ is providing oblation support in the region. Community of Christ families are also hosting refugees from other cities, offering shelter and support amidst the crisis."
Let us join in prayer, asking for peace and safety for those affected by this tragic crisis. Your continued prayers and support are vital and deeply appreciated. May we all find ways to extend our compassion and aid to those in need, bringing hope and comfort to the people of Haiti.
