theme Overview
God, where will your Spirit lead today?
Help me be fully awake and ready to respond.
Grant me courage to risk something new
And become a blessing of your love and peace. Amen.
The mission prayer has become of one of the most familiar prayers in Community of Christ. Start the opening line in almost any language and many may join you, reciting the prayer from memory. It’s simplicity and power has captured the church across cultures.
While some may think we’ve “been there, done that,” the perennial invitation of the mission prayer is to a discerning posture of life that sharpens the spiritual perceptivity of disciples and communities in all contexts and conditions. It’s a prayer of responsiveness, and in the words of President Cramm, “prophetic imagination and agility.” If we dare to incorporate this prayer on a regular basis, it awakens us to God’s movement within and around us. It helps us live our way into our most perplexing questions and desires to find a faithful way forward into God’s future of hope. It is a broad prayer with precise implication.
The guide we will be exploring for Reunion 2026 was written to accompany communities and congregations who are yearning for ways to respond to the movement of the Spirit within and around them in their unique contexts. It provides a methodology for incarnating our visions with God that we hope will lead to concrete insights that move each community forward in ways that are particular to them. Using the praxis model of action/reflection and the rhythm of awaken, risk, and bless, communities are offered tangible tools and practices to live their way into God’s possibilities emerging before them. This guide is grounded in a core belief that God is at work, and that if we pay attention in regular and intentional ways, we can discern and respond to the activity of God in ways that change us and change our world.
There has never been a more important and urgent moment for disciples to get serious about their calling to be God’s people in this troubled and beautiful world. The life-changing rhythm of awaken, risk, and bless provides a practical and deeply spiritual framework for those who yearn to go deeper beneath “church as usual.” There they will discover something vital and energizing– the ever-present movement of the Holy Spirit alive and active everywhere we dare to risk waking up.
