Summary of Position

The Rocky Mountain USA Mission Center is searching for a volunteer caretaker for the Big Spruce Campground. This is a seasonal position. The caretaker is responsible for the day-to-day operations, repairs and maintenance of the Big Spruce campgrounds. Living onsite is an added benefit for this position and is highly encouraged. A “caretaker house” is provided. Utilities, apart from personal telephone and internet service, are included in the caretaker house. The caretaker must maintain a positive relationship with the community, users, and volunteers. The caretaker will need to communicate effectively with the Big Spruce board and service providers. The caretaker must be capable of managing the budget. 

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for day-to-day operation and custodial care of structures and property at the Big Spruce Campgrounds.
  • Manage volunteers and guests.
  • All facilities must be kept safe, clean and in good working order.

Required Competencies/Skills

  1. Maintaining Grounds: Mowing and all outdoor care of the grounds.
  2. Maintaining buildings.
  3. Maintenance of equipment and tools.
  4. Order and maintain stock of cleaning supplies and paper products for facilities.
  5. Conduct minor repairs to buildings and other areas where needed.
  6. Arrange for larger repairs with approval from the Camping Board.
  7. Work Weekends: In conjunction with the campground board, organize and plan two seasonal work weekends during the year, currently scheduled for 16-18 May and 19-21 September. Prepare lists of projects to be completed.
  8. Working with Groups: Work with camp directors and guests to assist with the success of the camps and gatherings.

Desired Competencies/Skills

  • Operation of mowers, tractors and other power equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Second level handyman skills including chainsaw, screw gun, basic plumbing and electrical skills.
  • Basic building maintenance skills.
  • Manage multiple tasks at the same time and communicate status effectively.

Required Trainings

Registered Youth Worker/Anti-harassment Training: New employees are required to be a registered youth worker with Community of Christ or be able to register within 30 days of hire date. Anti-harassment training is also required within 30 days of hire and then required annually.
