Summary of Position
The Mission Center Peace and Justice Minister is responsible for planning and executing mission center peace and justice ministries, promoting congregational peace and justice programs, and supporting other mission center events and congregations as directed by the Mission Center President.
Essential Functions
- Create, maintain and sustain a mission center wide peace and justice program paying particular attention to awareness, advocacy, and other events in areas across the mission center
- Engage congregations and the mission center in ministries of invitation, hospitality, peace and justice, and diversity as core practices of discipleship and mission
- Identify, support, and work with pastors in order to develop peace and justice programs
- Collaborate in the development of peace and justice programs/events for youth
- Support the development and operations of a diversity team in the mission center
- Advocate for the application of our enduring principles and mission initiatives, especially pursuit of peace, sacredness of creation, worth of all persons, and unity in diversity
- Serve as an active member of the mission center staff and help prepare communications, worships, and educational activities
- Personally plan and direct, or support volunteers in planning and directing peace and justice events
- Collaborate with other organizations on the forefront of peace and justice activities by sharing information and rallying participation in peace and justice events organized by partners
- Invite prayerful support for peace and justice issues through education
- Recommend ways for pastors, congregations, and members to participate in advocacy communications for peace and justice
- Plan and direct at least one peace and justice focused weekend during the year
- Participate in ecumenical and interfaith events within the mission center and coordinate leadership and member participation in these organizations
- Participate in continuing education and obtain certification as needed
- Attend online and in person staff meetings, as well as other local, mission center, and World Church events as needed
- Travel to and participate in congregations most Sundays, participate in reunion “family camp” as needed, and attend World Conferences of Community of Christ when requested by the Mission Center President
- Communicate with and regularly obtain approval for activities from the mission center president
- Be familiar and able to share the Community of Christ’s principles of faithful disagreement, statement on Scripture, enduring principles, mission initiatives, basic beliefs, social media policies and policies for political engagement and advocacy
Required Competencies/Skills
- Ordained Community of Christ priesthood member
- Registered youth worker with Community of Christ
- Leadership experience at the congregational or Mission Center level
- Reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the Pacific Southwest International Mission Center
- Bachelor’s degree, Seminary education preferred
- A passion for peace and justice issues and an ability to articulate that passion
- Knowledge of the mission of Jesus Christ and the ways that peace and justice principles are present in scriptures
- Strong oral and written communication skills

Required Trainings
Registered Youth Worker/Anti-harassment Training: New employees are required to be a registered youth worker with Community of Christ or be able to register within 30 days of hire date. Anti-harassment training is also required within 30 days of hire and then required annually.
