Summary of Position

The Mission Center Youth Minister is responsible for planning and executing mission center youth events, fostering development and spiritual formation of youth, supporting other mission center events and congregations as directed by the Mission Center President.

Essential Functions

  1. Create, maintain and sustain a mission center wide youth program paying particular attention to the creation and implementation of mission center youth events.
  2. Engage youth in ministries of invitation, hospitality, peace and justice, generosity and diversity as core practices of discipleship and mission. 
  3. Identify, support, and work with congregational youth leaders in order to bring strong leadership for all youth programs. 
  4. Support congregations in the development of local youth programming. 
  5. Advocate for youth and youth ministries in congregations. 
  6. Serve as a liaison between World Church youth events (SPEC, IYF, etc.) and mission center youth and staff.
  7. Personally plan and direct, or support volunteers in planning and directing, all youth events including camping programs such as retreats. 
  8. Oversee the mission center youth program by attending all youth ministry events in the mission center. 
  9. Implement spiritual formation into youth events. 
  10. Support youth as mentor and identify other youth mentors throughout the mission center. 
  11. Plan and direct at least one peace and justice youth focused weekend during the year. 
  12. Support local administration of Community of Christ Registered Youth Worker program and youth worker training. 
  13. Experiment with new ministries and ways of engaging, equipping and inspiring youth on their journey of discipleship in encountering the Living Christ. 
  14. Attend online and in person staff meetings, as well as other local, mission center, and World Church events as needed. 
  15. Travel to and participate in congregations most Sundays, participate in reunion “family camp” as needed, and attend World Conferences of Community of Christ when requested by the Mission Center President. 
  16. Prepare drafts of communications and social media posts related to the youth ministry program.

Required Competencies/Skills

  • Ordained Community of Christ priesthood member 
  • Registered youth worker with Community of Christ 
  • Youth ministry experience at the congregational or Mission Center level 
  • Reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the Pacific Southwest International Mission Center 
  • Bachelor’s degree, Seminary education preferred 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Creative thinking skills 
  • Works well as part of a ministry team 
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision 
  • Demonstrates ability to think theologically and align ministries with Community of Christ identity, mission, message, and beliefs

Desired Competencies/Skills

  • Bilingual skills preferred
  • Competency and comfort with technology and various forms of electronic communication

Required Trainings

Registered Youth Worker/Anti-harassment Training: New employees are required to be a registered youth worker with Community of Christ or be able to register within 30 days of hire date. Anti-harassment training is also required within 30 days of hire and then required annually.
