Yield to Generosity

16 October 2024

The call is for workers in the cause of Zion; therefore neither tarry, nor doubt that I am.

Doctrine and Covenants 155:8

[Adapted from “Join This Adventure” by Apostle Bunda Chibwe, May/June 2022 Herald, p. 31]

The phrase “giving to my true capacity” enables me to live life authentically, irrespective of my environment. It prompts me to respond to individuals and communities experiencing strained or broken relationships. It helps us all to find mutually acceptable solutions that can enhance our lives and relationships. It helps us comprehend that our welfare depends on the welfare of others.

My African heritage honors the interconnectedness, inter-dependency, and relatedness of all people. We are brothers and sisters blessing each other. My salvation, our salvation, the world’s salvation are necessarily and essentially communal. We cannot be human alone.

Friends, we have been counseled that God is calling for a prophetic community to emerge, drawn from the nations of the world! Such a community is characterized by an uncommon devotion to the passion, compassion, and peace of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. Through divine grace and wisdom, this faith community will continue to receive abundant gifts, resources, and opportunities to equip itself for its mission, Christ’s mission.

As you consider giving, remember that we are made for interdependence; we are made for family. Together we can provide powerful opportunities for the weak and poor and for congregations that lack the resources to be self-supporting in their ministry.

Compassionate relationships are God’s dream. God’s dream as revealed in the ministry of Jesus Christ moves me to yield myself to the spirit of generosity and hospitality. I am ready and willing to surrender my best to God’s purpose in me and to give to my true capacity. The future looks bright, with great possibilities. Will you join me in this adventure?

Prayer Phrase

“You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity” (2 Corinthians 9:11).

Spiritual Practice

Overflowing Generosity

Spend five minutes thinking deeply about how God has shared abundantly with you in very specific ways. Where do you see God’s abundant generosity in your life? Say a prayer of thanksgiving for these blessings. Now, reminded of these blessings, think about how you can bless others. In what ways can God’s abundant generosity overflow from you to others? What specific blessing will you share with another this day?
