With Us All

24 July 2025

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

Luke 4:18–19

[From “God Is with Us” by Jim Long, Of Water and Spirit, Herald Publishing House, 2003, p. 26]

In my early years I left the church in which I had been raised. The sacraments had not been especially meaningful for me. Later, as a young adult, I realized that for those participating in the Community Christ, the sacraments were very meaningful. I was baptized. When I was confirmed, my whole body tingled, I now see that was the moment when I began a new relationship with the Lord. I had invited Jesus Christ into my life, and he came.

As I have shared in sacramental experiences with many people over the years, I have witnessed the testimony of God’s living presence in their lives. This is especially true as I am present to share in prayer for those who are sick. They receive peace, comfort, and healing. This ministry of healing is experienced in many different circumstances.

I recall having hands placed on my head and a prayer for me just before I left home for an important assignment. I was so concerned about what I needed to do that I became ill, and I was afraid my concerns would affect my judgments. As I began my assignment there were setbacks that seemed to threaten success. In each case, however, I felt the spirit of that prayer freeing me to use all my skills and knowledge. The outcome of that trip and my assignment was very positive. I have seen this same healing experience with others for whom I have prayed.

Time after time the sacraments have convinced me that God is with us all.

Prayer Phrase

“Do not be afraid, for I am your God…” (Isaiah 41:10).

Voices of God

What is the voice of God saying to us? Do we hear the whispers of God’s longing for shalom; God’s dream of beauty and wholeness for all creation? Do we hear the “voice” of God calling to us in faces and eyes, in the sounds of suffering and joy, in scripture and sacred word, in tears and laughter, in silence and noise? Spend a few moments reflecting on when and how God’s voice speaks to you. When did you first feel called to join God in the pursuit of peace and justice? How does the call of shalom continue to come to you through the many “voices” of God?
