But a Samaritan while traveling came upon him, and when he saw him he was moved with compassion. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, treating them with oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said,
“Take care of him, and when I come back I will repay you whatever more you spend.”

Luke 10:33–35

Somewhere a trickle of compassion begins seeping through the cracks where others join in; a current finds its way from the hill, an unstoppable torrent down the slope of goodwill.

Dave Heinze, “Whole and Alive,” Winds of Change

I pray for the grace to hold lightly
To be ready to release with freedom
Whatever would bring peace to someone else.

I pray for a generous spirit,
A willingness to stay present with others,
For the impulse to give freely what isn’t “mine” anyway.

I pray to remember that we belong to each other
And that there is actually enough, and more
When the spirit of generosity flows unrestricted.

May this spirit disrupt the systems of power
That perpetuate economic injustice.

May this spirit disrupt the status quo
Of cultures that tell us we need more and more and more.

May this spirit pour forth within and from us, unceasing,
“an unstoppable torrent down the slope of goodwill.”

Prayer Phrase

Courage

Spiritual Practice

Breathe deeply and repeat the word “courage” in the silence. Notice how you respond in body, mind, and spirit. Practice the feeling of spiritual strength, of stretching beyond what is comfortable and familiar. Bless the feelings that are evoked. Breathe again. Trust that you have everything you need to follow the Spirit in the places where courage is required today.
