Turn toward God

Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Psalm 34:14

I was 14 when I began to drive. In those days, we didn’t need a driver’s license or auto insurance. We left doors unlocked, and we left keys in cars.

After a little practice, I felt I was ready to drive on public roads. I invited my friends to go for a ride with me. I didn’t really have the experience I needed to drive safely, so whenever a car approached from the other direction or we approached a narrow bridge, I would close my eyes until we passed it. I knew it was stupid at the time, but I didn’t want to see the dangerous possibilities that might occur.

How often do we close our eyes to the problems around us—not wanting to see them, and therefore, not feeling any responsibility for them? How often do we turn our eyes away from someone in need, fearing they might ask us for help? How often do we stay in our comfortable homes, rather than join a worthy outreach program?

Then the final question: How often do we call for Divine help, with faith that God will not turn away? Choosing to respond as a generous disciple is one way we can turn toward God.

Reflection Question

When have you been tempted to “close your eyes” to a need or challenge around you—and what might it look like to keep your eyes open and respond with generosity instead?

Prayer Phrase

“You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity” (2 Corinthians 9:11).

Seeing with Generous Eyes

Sit in silence for a moment and center yourself with a few deep breaths. Reflect on the past day or week. Make a list of five ways you experienced God’s generosity—through people, creation, opportunities, or unexpected grace. After each item, offer a short prayer of thanks: “God of abundance, thank you for this gift.” Conclude with “May I carry this awareness into my day and respond with generosity in return.”
