The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
[Excerpted from a Lenten resource by Joey Williams, president of seventy]
Amid the chaos of displacement, a refugee journeys through borders, carrying the imago Dei—the divine image—within them. Imagine a family fleeing violence, their path and future uncertain. Their existence challenges us to see beyond borders and labels, recognizing their inherent dignity. Rooted in the prophetic call for justice, we must act—not just with charity but with transformative solidarity.
In a presentation at the 5th Latin American Peace Colloquy, John Glaser recalls visiting families in the colonias of Texas, living in makeshift shelters without running water or electricity. These communities, born of systemic neglect, reflect the stark realities faced by migrants worldwide. Yet, even in these hardships, Glaser saw hope. “God does not cry for the poor and marginalized; God cries with them,” he reminds us, urging us, as a prophetic people, to stand in solidarity with those neglected and marginalized within our communities.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaims that all people are entitled to dignity, freedom, and security—truths deeply rooted in the prophetic call for justice. As Glaser notes, “The pursuit of justice is not merely political or legal; it is a moral and spiritual imperative.” These families in the colonias, embodying resilience despite their struggles, challenge us to honor their humanity and act as advocates for change.
In recognizing the divine image in every refugee and migrant, we uphold their inherent worth and join Christ’s mission to bring abundant life to all. Together, we can transform a world of exclusion into one of justice and shared hope.
