The Power of Community

8 April 2025

Let your way of thinking be changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you.

Romans 12:2, adapted[Excerpted from a Lenten resource by Joey Williams, president of seventy]

During our Lenten journey, we are called to walk alongside those who face the harsh realities of life as refugees. The struggles they endure are a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the Enduring Principles that guide us. As we reflect on the words of Jesus, who proclaimed “good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18 NRSV), we are reminded of our mission to abolish poverty and end unnecessary suffering.

President Steve Veazey shares a personal story that resonates deeply with this mission. Once, while ministering in a poor area, a pastor apologized to him because there were not more people gathered for a morning class. The pastor explained, “Most of them are still out looking for something to eat today.” This moment broke Steve’s heart and highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of poverty and displacement. He asks those of us hoping to walk in solidarity with the poor and oppressed, “Are you willing to have your heart broken, too?”

The journey of refugees is often filled with challenges, from inhumane immigration policies to the constant search for safety and sustenance. Yet, in the face of these adversities, there is hope. The UN World Food Program’s efforts to address acute hunger and starvation highlight the importance of global cooperation and compassion.

As we journey with refugees, let us remember the transformative power of community. Walking closely with those living in poverty and displacement not only changes their lives but also transforms us, drawing us closer to Christ, who is always among the “least of these” (Matthew 25:31–46 NRSV). As theologian Henri Nouwen wrote, “When Jesus says, ‘What you did to the least of my brothers, you did to me’ (Matthew 25:40 NRSV), he is addressing to us a direct invitation not only to help but to discover the beauty of God in those who are to be helped.”
