The Most Unlikely Places

30 June 2026

By Carla Long, counselor the Presiding Bishop

Praise the Lord, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!

Psalm 117

I love the Super Bowl. No, wait, that’s not entirely truthful. I love Super Bowl parties! I love the people, the commercials, the game (sometimes!) and, of course, the food! When a work trip to the Philippines was planned over the Super Bowl in 2026, I was sad that I would miss out on our annual Super Bowl party.

Because of the time zones, the Super Bowl was showing at 8:00 am on Monday morning, just as we were getting ready to head out on a field trip. So, I knew unless someone had internet access on their phone and was willing to share, I wouldn’t be seeing any of it. After we had traveled a bit, I asked my friend (who did have internet on her phone) if she would tell me the score; she did better than that—she pulled up the game on her phone. Another friend said, “Wait! I think that you could watch that on my computer.” After a few minutes of looking for cords, we had the game on the computer.

And then…the SNACKS came out! We looked in our bags and found some chips, cookies, and chocolates, and we put them in the middle of the bus and everyone shared. I looked around the bus, and everyone was laughing and talking and snacking and getting excited, just like my Super Bowl parties at home. Even though it wasn’t quite perfect (we didn’t have the BEST reception for the game, the screen wasn’t so big, and not everyone understood the rules of football), we had the best time. What could have been a long and difficult trip up the mountain to our site where we were spending the day became a Super Bowl party thousands of miles from home and in the most unlikely of places! Talk about creative abundance!

Prayer Phrase

“And all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

Abundant Blessings

At the close of the day, reflect on where you noticed God’s blessings, especially in unexpected places. Offer a prayer of thanks and try to release any worry, trusting that God’s abundance will meet you again tomorrow.
