The Crossing

24 March 2025

Between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.

Luke 16:26

[Excerpted from a Lenten resource by Joey Williams, president of seventy]

The Cross

The cross on which Jesus died was neither ornate nor aesthetically pleasing. Yet, through the resurrection of Jesus, God turned this instrument of death into a symbol of divine love and forgiveness. For refugees, their journey is often marked by seemingly insurmountable challenges, much like the great chasm described in Luke 16:26. Their crossings can be perilous as they make their way through rivers, deserts, and mountains, facing many dangers along the way. The cross, a symbol of hope, life, and divine love, reminds us that death will not have its way when we extend God’s grace to those in need. It can also symbolize the great crossing point, where the world’s need meets the world’s generosity and love.

Prayer Phrase

“Love does no wrong to a neighbor…” (Romans 13:10).

Spiritual Practice

Reflection

Undocumented migrants often face insurmountable challenges, including legal barriers, social stigma, and limited access to essential services. Reflect on the resilience and courage required to navigate these obstacles. Consider the importance of advocacy and support in helping undocumented migrants access legal protection and basic services. Reflect on the role of community and faith in providing a sense of hope and belonging. Think about how we can stand in solidarity with undocumented migrants and work toward creating a more just and inclusive society.
