Stand Firm in the Lord

16 March 2025

By Cathi Cackler-Veazey, World Church Diversity and Inclusion Team, co-chair

Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

Philippians 3:17; 4:1

Recently my granddaughter joined her high school track team. This is her first year of high school, so it has taken a certain amount of bravery for her to begin this adventure. She has always been focused on the accomplishments she wishes to make in life, but I have been amazed at her dedication to doing her best to become an excellent runner in her track events. She has trained and learned the best approach to succeed in the races she runs. Running against others who are older and more experienced has not dampened her determination. That has paid off in her wins because she always focuses on the goal.

Paul told the followers of Christ they must be transformed by his example. Paul called on them to focus on that goal and work to be as citizens of heaven rather than earth. Just like running a race, they must prepare themselves and practice the discipline to be like Christ. Paul said they would be transformed.

To be a runner, my granddaughter had to embrace the reality that she was a member of a group who were runners. She had to work to be that person. Paul was saying we can be transformed from what we are to what we can be through the embrace of Christ in our lives. We must ask ourselves, “Do I want to be more Christlike?”

Prayer Phrase

“Love does no wrong to a neighbor…” (Romans 13:10).

Spiritual Practice

Tears of Compassion

Offer a silent prayer for the gift of God’s compassion. Cup your hands and ask God to make you aware of the suffering that causes the Earth and its inhabitants to groan and weep. Be open to faces or places, sounds or voices, feelings of connection with those who suffer. Imagine catching the tears of those you see and holding them in your hands. Listen for prayer images or words God may give you. Discern any active responses of ministry or healing you sense invited to complete for those who weep.
