Seeking Home

28 December 2025

By Art Smith, Council of Twelve Apostles

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”

Matthew 2:13–15

Growing up, a story like the flight to Egypt felt like pure, unrelatable fantasy. The idea of fleeing our home—or even our country—for safety was unimaginable. Today, for so many in my Community of Christ family, it’s all too real. What seems almost unthinkable now is the dream of ever returning home again.

As I reflect on today’s scripture, journalists are reporting on Syrian refugees returning home after the fall of the regime that forced them to flee. Images show people coming back after years to discover what remains of their homes. Recovering a long-lost home may seem like a dream come true, even though significant challenges lie ahead.

Meanwhile, in Haiti, a gang leader opened fire in Cité Soleil last week, killing 200 people and forcing families to flee again. Many leave everything behind in search of refuge elsewhere in the country. Some families are separated when a spouse or child receives a visa to a safer country.

Our family has also been adjusting to a new reality after the sudden and tragic death of our 26-year-old daughter and sister just a few months ago.

Reflecting on these situations, I’ve realized that for most of us, we can’t go back. The home we long for is often a new home with new realities.

For all who have had to flee the comfort and safety of the home they once knew, there is comfort in the mercy of those who receive us and offer asylum in difficult circumstances. Often, the home we find is in the familiar relationships of our church family around the world and in the welcoming Spirit of God, who receives us wherever we are and whatever our circumstances may be.

Prayer Phrase

“I bring you good news that will cause great joy” (Luke 2:10).

Kindling the Light

Choose a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably. Place a candle or small light in front of you. Take a few slow breaths, letting the noise of the day settle. Light the candle. As you strike the match or switch on the light, say softly:
“I make room for joy to grow within me.
I make room for the light that connects me to others.
I make room for the Spirit of Christ.”
Pause for a few breaths, letting the glow of the light fill your awareness.
