Sanctuary

5 March 2025

Ash Wednesday

Open your hearts and feel the yearnings of your brothers and sisters who are lonely, despised, fearful, neglected, unloved. Reach out in understanding, clasp their hand, and invite all to share in the blessings of community created in the name of the One who suffered on behalf of all.

Doctrine and Covenants 161:3a

The Grove
For most members of the Community of Christ, the grove reminds us of the story of a young teenager whose faith journey begins by going into the woods and praying for answers. This sacred space beckons worshipers toward sanctuary as they seek their own encounters with the Divine, embodying the scripture, “If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God” (James 1:5).

For many refugees, their physical journey begins by fleeing their villages and running into the woods, where they pray for safety. The refugee travels by night, seeking refuge from danger and hoping for a safe haven. The grove, for them, is not just a place of spiritual seeking but a literal sanctuary from the perils they face. In their darkest moments, they too call upon the Divine for wisdom and protection, embodying a profound faith amidst their trials.

Prayer Phrase

“Love does no wrong to a neighbor…” (Romans 13:10).

Spiritual Practice

Reflection

Displacement is a profound and often traumatic experience that affects millions of people worldwide. Understanding the reasons behind displacement, such as violence, persecution, and natural disasters, is crucial. Reflect on the emotional and psychological impact of being forced to leave one’s home and the challenges faced during the journey to safety. Consider how displacement disrupts lives, separates families, and creates a sense of loss and uncertainty. Reflect on the importance of empathy and compassion in responding to the needs of displaced individuals and how we can open our hearts to support them.
