God, the Eternal Creator, weeps for the poor, displaces, mistreated, and diseased of the world because of their unnecessary suffering. Such conditions are not God’s will. Open your ears to hear the pleading of mothers and fathers in all nations who desperately seek a future of hope for their children. Do not turn away from them. For in their welfare resides your welfare.

In Brussels, a remarkable journey of faith and resilience unfolds. Joey Williams shares the inspiring story of Elray and Methode, two individuals whose paths crossed in the most unexpected ways. Elray, newly called to serve as a seventy, found a pathway to live out his calling through Methode, a Congolese refugee seeking connection and community. Their initial meetings blossomed into a small, yet vibrant congregation, embracing Christ’s peace (Shalom) as much more than simply the absence of war, and embodying the Enduring Principles of the Community of Christ.
Elray’s journey was marked by signs and divine moments, such as meeting Methode at Martin Luther King Square, which affirmed his calling. Together, they navigated language barriers, cultural differences, and the challenges of refugee life. Their community grew, and they were joined by others from diverse backgrounds, including World Service Corps volunteer Kahelani from French Polynesia, who served tirelessly alongside them to support this budding community.
As we journey with refugees during the Lenten season, may we commit to radical hospitality and solidarity, assured of the transformative power of forming community with our neighbors.
