Prophetic Change

27 June 2025

By John Bonney of Springfield, Oregon USA

Agree with God, and be at peace; in this way good will come to you.

Job 22:21

Some believe that “you can’t make a difference without being different.” This thought intrigues me because it could closely align with prophetic people. Being different—either individually or as a group—suggests a belief, attitude, or action outside the cultural norm. Many different acts are relatively inconsequential and go unremarked.

A prophet, with a small “p,” is someone who sees the need for change and acts on it as an individual. Prophetic people are those who recognize needed change on a broader level and go about making that communal change. In Community of Christ, our prophet called us to become a prophetic people.

For people not wishing to make waves, not wanting to upset the status quo, such prophetic change is uncomfortable. Some prefer inertia. And if the prophetic change is significant enough to push against larger community norms, it can be dangerous. However, the brave person and community say, “We can’t make a difference without being different.”

I’m not talking wild-eyed rebellion against everything. I’m talking about allowing individuals and communities to become sensitive to and aware of the needs for change. That is the formational part of growing and maturing. I believe that Community of Christ has made some real progress in recent decades. What will be the next prophetic change?

Prayer Phrase

“Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer” (Romans 12:12).

Hope in the Present

Take a moment to pause and reflect on where hope is present in your life. Write down three things that give you hope. It could be a kind word from a friend, the warmth of the sun, or progress toward a goal. If you are facing difficulties, gently remind yourself: “Even now, hope is present. Even now, something new is possible.” Express gratitude for this hope knowing that each day is an opportunity for renewal.
