Prepare for God’s Promise (Part 4)

11 December 2025

By Shannon McAdam, Council of Twelve Apostles

…then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

Isaiah 35:6

[Adapted from “When We Gather,” Advent and Christmas 2025 Resource]

Isaiah tells us streams of water will flow in the desert.

Looking at the image of streams in the desert I am stirred to respond to the current climate emergency. At our 2025 World Conference we voted in favour of two resolutions about taking action in response to the climate emergency. One was a call to participate in a just transition away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable forms of energy. The second highlighted the importance of recognizing the impact of the climate emergency on human rights, and working for the recognition of climate refugees.

I heard stories at World Conference of my siblings in Christ whose lives are already being irrevocably changed by the impacts of climate change. Sea levels rising deeply impacts our siblings from island nations, and droughts that lead to food insecurity mean a constant struggle for survival for many. We are undoubtedly called to work for climate justice for all and make sure we provision ourselves for a radically different future. Could those of us who are not yet experiencing these impacts support those who are?

How can we be more fully engaged and take action in response to our climate emergency?

Prayer Phrase

“I bring you good news that will cause great joy” (Luke 2:10).

Kindling the Light

Choose a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably. Place a candle or small light in front of you. Take a few slow breaths, letting the noise of the day settle. Light the candle. As you strike the match or switch on the light, say softly:
“I make room for joy to grow within me.
I make room for the light that connects me to others.
I make room for the Spirit of Christ.”
Pause for a few breaths, letting the glow of the light fill your awareness.
