by Shannon McAdam, Council of Twelve Apostles
May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[Adapted from “When We Gather,” Advent and Christmas 2025 Resource]
Advent invites us to prepare not only for God’s promises but for the covenantal relationship they represent. God’s promises are not one-sided; they invite our participation in bringing them to life. In covenant, we are mutually accountable—called to live in ways that help creation flourish and move toward a shared, hopeful future. The prophets, especially Isaiah, remind us that God’s promises are always tied to faithful living, justice, and the renewal of all things.
This Advent, Isaiah’s visions guide our preparation: swords transformed into plowshares, natural enemies living in peace, deserts springing with water, and the birth of Emmanuel—God with us—who challenges systems of power. These images invite us to reflect on how we might respond: working for peace, nurturing harmony, sharing resources, and embodying justice. As we weave our lives together in covenant with God and one another, we prepare the way for these promises to unfold among us.

Prayer Phrase
“I bring you good news that will cause great joy” (Luke 2:10).
Kindling the Light
Choose a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably. Place a candle or small light in front of you. Take a few slow breaths, letting the noise of the day settle. Light the candle. As you strike the match or switch on the light, say softly:
“I make room for joy to grow within me.
I make room for the light that connects me to others.
I make room for the Spirit of Christ.”
Pause for a few breaths, letting the glow of the light fill your awareness.
