Pass It On

Eternal joy and peace await those who grow in the grace of generosity that flows from compassionate hearts without thought of return.

Doctrine and Covenants 163:9

I have a heartfelt love for tithing, both local and world ministries. I give every week, but I asked myself, “How can I give more?” I started to think about how blessed I feel at times.

So now, every time a financial blessing comes my way, I give $5.00. A couple at church paid for my Sunday dinner—$5.00. A couple gave me a 120-mile ride to a workshop—$5.00. A neighbor shoveled our driveway—$5.00. My workplace provided meals at a three-day event—$5.00. A neighbor made too much chili and brought over a batch—$5.00.

You get the idea. This practice is helping me recognize my blessings as well as helping me give to my “true capacity.” By giving $5.00 each time, I keep part of the blessing, the church gets part, and the grace of the one who gave to me is passed on—everyone wins!

Generous God, help us express our thankfulness to those who bless our lives. May we extend those blessings to others and share love and peace.

Prayer Phrase

“For by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:8).

Spiritual Practice

The Jesus Prayer of Mercy

The Jesus Prayer is an ancient spiritual practice from Orthodox Christianity. It is a way of connecting with the gracious Spirit of Christ as we ask to receive his mercy. The prayer comes from the scripture of the blind man calling Jesus to heal him. Silently enter prayer and let your breath become slow and even. Greet God and then take up the prayer phrase: Lord, Jesus Christ (as you breathe in) … have mercy on me (as you breathe out). Prayerfully repeat these words for several minutes (or forty times). Breathe the presence of Christ into your mind, heart, and body. Be transformed as you receive the compassionate, peaceful heart of Jesus.
