Memorials of Despair

14 April 2025

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5

[Excerpted from a Lenten resource by Joey Williams, president of seventy]

Dark Night of the Soul

These three sculpted figures depict phases of the Dark Night of the Soul: despair, emptying, and transformation. Even faithful disciples may experience a crisis of fear, suffering, and doubt when God seems distant. In the midst of this despair, we empty ourselves, making room for the transforming presence of the divine in our lives.

For refugees, their journey often mirrors this dark night, filled with fear and uncertainty. They face memorials of despair: abandoned homes, lost loved ones, and the constant threat of danger. Their sense of abandonment and uncertainty about survival is profound. Yet, in these darkest moments, the light of hope persists, reminding us that God’s love and grace are ever-present, guiding us toward transformation and new beginnings.

Prayer Phrase

“Love does no wrong to a neighbor…” (Romans 13:10).

Spiritual Practice

Reflection

Experiencing trauma can leave deep emotional scars, but finding hope and courage to move forward is essential for healing. Reflect on the sources of strength and resilience that help individuals overcome trauma. Consider the importance of support systems, such as counseling and community support, in the healing process. Reflect on the role of faith and spirituality in providing hope and comfort during difficult times. Think about how we can create safe and supportive environments that help refugees heal from trauma and find hope for the future.
