Meditation on Courage

13 March 2023

By Spiritual Formation Ministries

I have said this to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution, but take courage: I have conquered the world!

John 16:33

“...that in me you may have peace.”
Rest in the peace of Christ available to you here and now.

“In the world you face persecution.”
Consider the cost of discipleship in your life amid the dominant systems and powers in the world today. What is at stake to live fully the Christ life?

“...but take courage:”
Reach deep into your soul, underneath the fear and hesitation to discover the unceasing love of God present with you in all places and conditions. What are you capable of risking for peace when you remember you are loved, connected, and never alone?

“I have conquered the world!”
Turning systems and powers on their heads, Jesus models a subversive love that honors the worth of all people and creation. We find courage for today in the pattern of this love.

Prayer Phrase

Courage

Spiritual Practice

Breathe deeply and repeat the word “courage” in the silence. Notice how you respond in body, mind, and spirit. Practice the feeling of spiritual strength, of stretching beyond what is comfortable and familiar. Bless the feelings that are evoked. Breathe again. Trust that you have everything you need to follow the Spirit in the places where courage is required today.
