Humility and Compassion

30 November 2024

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:10

[From Let Gratitude Show You the Way: A 21-Day Devotional Guide, Herald House, 2012]

As God calls us to generosity, our generosity is not a reason to boast or gloat. When we give, we give with a humble and open heart as we share generously with others. In the way that God’s grace is given freely, so too should we freely give. We need not keep score of how generous we are with what we have.

God has called us as humble servants to love and give compassionately without reserve. By engaging in humble generosity, we invite others to share in God’s grace and love as we have known them.

In what ways can you respond compassionately to those in your community needing humble generosity?

What are you grateful for today?

Prayer Phrase

“For everything created by God is good” (1 Timothy 4:4).

Spiritual Practice

Joy of Gratitude

Stand, if possible, with arms outstretched. Imagine God filling your arms with all that you have: family, friends, and possessions. Hold out your arms until they feel tired. Now, bring your arms across your body. Place your hand over your heart and thank God for the abundance that fills your life. Sit for a time aware of that abundance. Then ask God to help you open your heart in gratitude and share freely with others.
