Grow in Possibilities

14 June 2026

By Mike Hoffman, Graceland University Campus Minister

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Genesis 18:11–14

When you read this, I will be only days away from my planned “retirement” from serving over 30 years as an employed minister in Community of Christ. Like the story about Sarah bearing a son late in life, it comes as a surprise. Who me? I cannot be old enough to retire. When did that happen? But as I share my story with Graceland University students about the things I have lived through, the reality sets in.

Over the past couple of years, I have thought about what retirement might look like. I plan on being active, but there are so many possibilities: the roles of father and grandfather call to me. But I have also wondered about practicing what I have been preaching here in Graceland’s InSpire program (the ministry and leadership practicum)—to go out into the world to make positive changes through new, creative expressions of the church.

Might I somehow see a coffee shop in my future? A sort of barista-chaplain who serves a mean cup of latte, laughter, and prayer. What about working at a fitness center where I can not only lose my “freshman 15” (the weight I have gained while serving at Graceland) but lift weights and spirits, too? Or do I focus on writing or photography as more than just hobbies? Or maybe I can substitute teach like some of my friends have?

I imagine it is a bit like winning the lottery (although I do not play). What might I do if time does not directly correlate with income? The possibilities seem promising. In any of those situations I see myself growing in new directions like Sarah and Abraham did in raising a later-in-life Isaac. God challenges us, regardless of our station in life, or age, to continue to grow in possibilities. My prayer is that we all see the possibilities before us and continue to grow in all aspects of our lives.

Prayer Phrase

“And all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

Abundant Blessings

At the close of the day, reflect on where you noticed God’s blessings, especially in unexpected places. Offer a prayer of thanks and try to release any worry, trusting that God’s abundance will meet you again tomorrow.
