Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.
Adapted from An Invitation to a Whole-life Journey of Abundant Generosity
Divine guidance has told us we are poised to fulfill God’s ultimate vision for the church. We are challenged as faithful disciples to respond to a growing awareness of God’s abundant generosity (p. 2).
In the month of September, through daily thoughts, prayers, meditations, personal stories, and questions for reflection, you are invited on a spiritual journey as we explore the pathway to abundant generosity. Each day prayerfully consider the scripture; read the prayer, story, or meditation; say the prayer phrase out loud; ponder the question; and engage in the spiritual practice. This spiritual journey of meditation and reflection can be done individually or collectively as we consider our response to God’s grace and generosity and the urgency to fulfill God’s vision for the church.
Generosity is an act of faith and prophetic hope…and is a disciple’s investment in the future of Christ’s mission on Earth.
Generosity in response to Jesus Christ is a witness of faith and hope…it proclaims that I have confidence that God’s purposes are being fulfilled, and I want to be part of that fulfillment. —Steve Veazey, February 2015 Herald
Together, the abundance of our collective capacity as a community of Christ can provide all the resources needed to bring changed people, changed communities, and a changed world.
God’s vision of the future—the peaceful reign of God on earth—is the driving vision for our generosity. We give for a future that God tells us we are poised to fulfill. Generosity that fills our whole life is what brings that future into being and makes us the people we are called to be.
Prayer Phrase
“You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity” (2 Corinthians 9:11).
Seeing with Generous Eyes
Sit in silence for a moment and center yourself with a few deep breaths. Reflect on the past day or week. Make a list of five ways you experienced God’s generosity—through people, creation, opportunities, or unexpected grace. After each item, offer a short prayer of thanks: “God of abundance, thank you for this gift.” Conclude with “May I carry this awareness into my day and respond with generosity in return.”
