Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.

My husband, Ron, and I were late for an appointment and hurrying by car to get there. Alongside the road an older lady was trying to flag someone down. It was 102 degrees outside, and she had a flat tire. Gritting his teeth but pulling in behind her, my husband got out to see what she needed.
Her ill husband was in the car, and they were on the way to town. She had gotten new tires the week before and could not explain the blowout. Her cell phone didn’t have service, so she had no way to call for help. We let her use our cell phone to call her daughter, but there was no answer.
My husband glanced at his watch. He knew we were going to be late, but he got the spare tire and jack from her trunk. I heard the woman’s husband yelling to leave the car on for the air conditioning. I heard her yell back in frustration.
As Ron was changing her tire, I went to check on her husband. I could see he had been ill for some time. I asked if he was all right, and he yelled at me to shut the door and get away from him. Ron finished changing the tire just as the husband yelled at us to hurry up. The lady thanked us, and they went on their way.
Getting back in the car, we looked at each other, stunned at the reception from the woman’s husband. In the end, it didn’t matter. It was still the right thing to do. We were late for our appointment but still were able to meet.
We are called to look out for others in need, whatever that might be at that very moment. It is exciting to think God will use us. It is a blessing to be fully awake in the moment of service.
