These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace.
For years I recorded—in shorthand—baby blessings, prayers, and confirmation prayers for friends and family members. Not long ago I went through some old files and discovered a folder containing several manuscripts I never delivered.
I read them and wondered if I should do anything with them after so long a time. After discussing it with my son I decided to mail them with a cover letter.
A surprising event took place. One recipient, a troubled young man who had been struggling with life, received a copy of the blessing prayer given when he was an infant. He read and reread the forgotten blessing. Then, just before going out with his friends for a New Year’s Eve celebration, he read it again.
Later that night he was in a terrible accident. He was unable to recall what happened, but when he hit the ground, the impact shattered bones in his legs, hips, ankles, feet, and back. He spent many hours in surgery. His recovery required living for months in a wheelchair and undergoing physical therapy.
Later, he said the only thing that kept him going while he was awaiting rescue was the prayer of blessing he had received in the mail.
Perhaps at this time in his life, it meant more to him than it might have when he was younger.
God surely was in this prayer of blessing This experience tells me it never is too late to be a blessing to others. We should never hesitate to do whatever we can to help one another. I am so thankful that I finally sent this young man the text of his blessing.
Prayer Phrase
“And all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).
Abundant Blessings
At the close of the day, reflect on where you noticed God’s blessings, especially in unexpected places. Offer a prayer of thanks and try to release any worry, trusting that God’s abundance will meet you again tomorrow.
