Filling the Void

18 April 2025

Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks from the water that I will give will never be thirsty again.

John 4:13–14, adapted

[Excerpted from a Lenten resource by Joey Williams, president of seventy]

Chuck Montgomery’s journey with citizen diplomacy reveals the sacred truth that relationships heal and transform. Through his work with the Iowa Council for International Understanding and the US Center for Citizen Diplomacy, he witnessed the struggles and triumphs of refugees and displaced individuals.

Chuck recalls young leaders from the Middle East arriving in Des Moines, carrying the weight of fear and uncertainty. Their parents were hesitant to send them, worried for their safety. Yet, in the quiet and welcoming streets of Iowa, barriers dissolved. “We fell in love with these kids,” Chuck shared, reflecting on the deep bonds formed over shared meals and honest conversations.

What Chuck learned about diplomacy can be essential for us as we engage in the lives of refugees, as the loss and displacement they experience often overshadow hope. Chuck’s stories remind us that hope is rekindled through presence. He speaks of a college student in China who shared his meal with a homeless woman. That act of generosity touched millions online and served as a beacon of humanity.

This Lenten season, as we walk alongside refugees, let us follow Christ’s call to radical hospitality. In each handshake, meal, and moment of connection, we plant seeds of hope for a brighter future.

Prayer Phrase

Spiritual Practice

Reflection

Finding peace after experiencing violence and displacement is a journey that requires faith, resilience, and support. Reflect on the role of faith and spirituality in providing comfort and hope during difficult times. Consider the importance of community support in helping refugees rebuild their lives and find new opportunities. Reflect on the transformative power of Christ’s peace in healing the wounds of violence and creating a sense of purpose and belonging. Think about how we can be instruments of Christ’s peace by supporting refugees in their journey towards healing and wholeness.
