For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
[Adapted from Choose Generosity: Discovering Whole Life Stewardship, Herald House, 2019, p. 111]
We are blessed with the Holy Spirit, which supports us in making Responsible Choices. “The promises of God in Jesus Christ are sure—that by the Holy Spirit we will be given grace to do the things we have been asked: courage in the struggle for justice, passion for peace in the midst of violence, forgiveness of our sin, stewardship in place of materialism, healing of body and spirit where there is hurt, and eternal life in the face of death” (Sharing in Community of Christ, 4th Ed., p. 60).
Like many difficult questions of our time, we will not always agree on the best way forward to bring about economic justice. Sometimes we will find ourselves on opposite sides of the same issue. In these moments, we must uphold the principles of Faithful Disagreement and trust in the Holy Spirit’s power to work in and through us.
As messy as life can be, it would be easier to avoid getting involved in the complex issues of our time, especially in how we achieve worldwide economic justice. However, as we practice whole-life stewardship, there is no choice but to dive in and trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us and hold us together.
Prayer Phrase
“Happy are those who observe justice” (Psalm 106:3).
Healing and Reconciliation
Gather a small mound of stones. Meditate on the stones as symbols of differences and destructive acts that continue to separate and wound the human family. Name and anoint each “stone wound” with a drop of water or scented oil. Offer them to God in a prayer for healing and reconciliation.
