Destroying Barriers

Destroying Barriers

6 October 2026

By Karim Regina Frohmut of Ferraz de Vasconcelos, Brazil

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

2 Corinthians 5:17–19

At the beginning of the second semester of 2025, I began taking classes on citizenship, human rights, and public policies. In Brazil, as in other parts of the world, we are living through moments of intolerance and a lack of respect. Due to the growth of Pentecostal churches, there is a lot of religious fundamentalism. Within this theme—intolerance and religious fundamentalism—we had a class led by Father Dimas from the Catholic Church, Sheikh Faisan from the local Islamic community, and Pastor Rita from a small evangelical Pentecostal denomination.

Each one shared their story; each spoke about the love of God. The Sheikh emphasized that what united us was the worship of God, even though we differ in theology regarding the divinity of Jesus and the nature of the Trinity. He stressed that we must tear down the barriers that separate us. What touched me most that morning was the word “love,” and I thought: how could I demonstrate that love? It is something many claim to have, but few practice.

Something touched my heart to share the Mission Prayer that is very special to us: “God, where will your Spirit lead me today? Help me to be fully awake and ready to respond. Grant me courage to risk something new and transform me into a blessing of your love and peace. Amen!”

I asked permission to speak and read our prayer. Everyone there became silent and enchanted! I can say that I felt love all around us, reflected in the eyes of everyone present. I felt very happy to break down barriers and build a bridge of unity and love. It was a moving experience to share something so special to all of us with strangers—special because it speaks of spirit and love. We must destroy barriers and build many bridges.

This prayer united us in a loving spirit. I also believe it is important to say it to as many people as possible: strangers, friends, and family, because it is a treasure. Everyone should know Community of Christ and understand why it is so different: because its pillars include the Sacredness of Creation, Unity in Diversity, and the Pursuit of Peace! And on that day, we all felt it: peace and love!

Prayer Phrase

“Let us work for the good of all” (Galatians 6:10).

Spiritual Hunger

Jesus discerned hungers of body and spirit, and he fed them through a physical, verbal, spiritual ministry of presence. In a time of listening prayer, ask God to help you discern physical or spiritual hungers of people in your congregation, community, and global family. Invite the Spirit to move you to one hospitable act that “feeds” someone’s hunger today.
