Collective Action

10 April 2025

Let your way of thinking be changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you.

Romans 12:2, adapted

Recognizing how policies and governance impact our daily lives can be challenging. One of the foundational aspects of political advocacy is consciousness raising, which helps individuals understand that their personal struggles are often linked to broader systemic issues.

For example, someone dealing with mental health issues like depression or anxiety might believe their struggles are personal failures. However, access to mental health care is shaped by socioeconomic factors, health insurance, and government funding. The stigma surrounding mental health is reinforced by societal attitudes and political decisions. In this way, an individual’s mental health journey is not just a personal issue—it’s part of a larger political and systemic reality.

Similarly, a family struggling to afford groceries may see their hardship as a private financial challenge. In reality, food insecurity is tied to larger political issues such as income inequality, minimum wage laws, and welfare policies. Government decisions influence access to nutritious food and financial stability, meaning that food insecurity is both a personal struggle and a political problem.

Consciousness raising is not just about realizing that these challenges are systemic—it’s also about making connections with others who face similar issues. When we recognize that others share our struggles, we begin to see the power of collective action. As disciples, this realization has profound implications. Politics can serve as a means of hospitality, fostering inclusion and justice where they do not yet exist.

In Faith Seeking Understanding, theologian Daniel Migliore explains that a church engaged in mission allows the Holy Spirit into every aspect of human life—including politics. Faith is not meant to be compartmentalized, separated from political engagement. Instead, disciples are called to embody their beliefs in all aspects of life, including public policy and governance.
