And you will not have a mind to injure one another, but to live peaceably, and to render to every man according to that which is his due.
[From “Mary’s Journey of Transformation” as told by Karin Peter, Mar/Apr 2025 Herald, p. 39]
In 2018, the Latter-day seeker ministry identified Southern Idaho as a potentiala rea for a small-group experiment with students. This high-desert, mountainous, and sparsely populated region, with predominantly Latter Day Saints, is home to a large LDS university.
The goal was to reach out to those exploring Community of Christ as a place for their spiritual journey.
Mary Smith, a widowed septuagenarian from Idaho Falls, was the only member in the area. Despite her conservative Mid-American roots and quiet service in a congregation fifty miles away, Mary agreed to host the group. This decision uprooted her world, with seventy people invading her home monthly, encouraging her to invest in new relationships.
The first contacts were from LGBTQ+ community, leading Mary to participate in a local Pride event alone. This brave step fostered authentic, pastoral relationships with the LGBTQ+ community and allies in Southern Idaho. A fellowship group of older ladies formed and continues to meet today.
Although the pandemic, job transfers, and graduations eventually ended the formal small group, several individuals began making the hourlong trek to attend the nearest congregation. This journey culminated in the recent confirmation of a family that first met in Mary’s living room in 2018. Through this experience, Mary and her congregation have opened themselves to new possibilities of what God can do in their midst.
Prayer Phrase
“Do not be afraid, for I am your God…” (Isaiah 41:10).
Voices of God
What is the voice of God saying to us? Do we hear the whispers of God’s longing for shalom; God’s dream of beauty and wholeness for all creation? Do we hear the “voice” of God calling to us in faces and eyes, in the sounds of suffering and joy, in scripture and sacred word, in tears and laughter, in silence and noise? Spend a few moments reflecting on when and how God’s voice speaks to you. When did you first feel called to join God in the pursuit of peace and justice? How does the call of shalom continue to come to you through the many “voices” of God?
