As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Recently we were gifted a hydroponic growing system and have enjoyed experimenting with various seeds, watching them grow into healthy plants. I find it amazing that plants thrive without soil—if the appropriate fertilizer is added to the water. There comes a time, however, when the roots become tangled, and the plant becomes so large it needs to be transplanted.
One might think this would be an easy transition from water nutrients to soil. The plant has grown to a reasonable height; the roots are plentiful, albeit slender. The roots, however, haven’t had to work to grow the plant. Transplanting requires time and care, providing extra water and nutrients until the plant can “put down roots” and continue growing. And, obviously, it will continue to require water and light to flourish and produce fruit.
Our congregations can resemble a hydroponic garden. We rely on this community to provide love and support. Yet our discipleship cannot just be lived out in this safe bubble. We are called to transplant ourselves into a world who yearns for the message of Jesus Christ, continuing to draw strength and support from that foundation that has nurtured us in the faith, allowing us to witness of God’s love.
Prayer Phrase
“Do not be afraid, for I am your God…” (Isaiah 41:10).
Voices of God
What is the voice of God saying to us? Do we hear the whispers of God’s longing for shalom; God’s dream of beauty and wholeness for all creation? Do we hear the “voice” of God calling to us in faces and eyes, in the sounds of suffering and joy, in scripture and sacred word, in tears and laughter, in silence and noise? Spend a few moments reflecting on when and how God’s voice speaks to you. When did you first feel called to join God in the pursuit of peace and justice? How does the call of shalom continue to come to you through the many “voices” of God?
