These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace.

It is fun to explore Advent and Christmas traditions from around the world. Many cultures and countries have different holiday breads that only make an appearance this time of year. Julekake comes from Norway and is a yeast bread filled with spices and dried fruit. This activity of baking bread can be done as a family or as an evening or weekend activity in your congregation or group.

Notes:
- Consider making this bread the week prior to a Communion or an agape meal service. Bread can be frozen and then warmed in the oven after thawing for a fresh-baked taste.
- If you have allergies or difficulty finding any of the dried fruits, you can substitute an equal amount of any other dried fruit of similar size.
- Instead of using a mixer to knead the dough, have kids do it. Remember many kids love to get their hands messy!
- This activity can be turned into a mindful practice by inviting people to consider:
- Where the ingredients came from and all who participated in getting it from field to table.
- What does it feel like when I mix the dough with my hands?
- If you choose to eat the bread, what does it taste like? What does it make you think of?
Prayer Phrase
“I bring you good news that will cause great joy” (Luke 2:10).
Kindling the Light
Choose a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably. Place a candle or small light in front of you. Take a few slow breaths, letting the noise of the day settle. Light the candle. As you strike the match or switch on the light, say softly:
“I make room for joy to grow within me.
I make room for the light that connects me to others.
I make room for the Spirit of Christ.”
Pause for a few breaths, letting the glow of the light fill your awareness.
