Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

The story of the widow’s mite raises questions about giving. Why does Jesus value the widow’s contribution more than the contributions of the wealthy? If we have abundance, are we unable to give like the widow gave? Is this story about the widow’s giving, or is it about what the widow first received?
If the story is solely about giving, we put ourselves in a position of comparing and contrasting two offerings. The impoverished widow gives all that she had, and we see her give beyond her capacity through complete sacrifice. The wealthy gave from their abundance, and we witness no obvious sacrifice or giving to their true capacity.
But what if the story isn’t just about giving? Throughout the Gospel of Luke, Jesus reminds us of the need to be holistic in our discipleship by highlighting the cycle of receiving and giving. The scriptures remind us that when we receive the Holy Spirit, we respond focused on God’s vision by living Christ’s mission.
Our response by sharing generously awakens others to God’s gifts and contributes to their desire to share. Consider the story when Jesus fed the 5,000 after a young boy shared his fish and bread. There are several ways to interpret what happened. Maybe Jesus literally multiplied the limited food that was offered. But an equally amazing miracle would be if the young boy’s willingness to share all that he had awakened the generosity in others, and they were willing to share what they had too.
