A Hopeful Future

6 March 2025

Open your hearts and feel the yearnings of your brothers and sisters who are lonely, despised, fearful, neglected, unloved. Reach out in understanding, clasp their hand, and invite all to share in the blessings of community created in the name of the One who suffered on behalf of all.

Doctrine and Covenants 161:3a

[Adapted from Michael Wright, “Toward the Peaceful One,” 2021, in Project Zion podcast]

In the heart of Rome, a new chapter began for Fateme and her mother, Kobra. They had journeyed from the squalid Moria Refugee Camp in Greece, fleeing the violence and oppression of their homeland, Afghanistan. Their arrival in Italy marked the end of a perilous journey and the beginning of a hopeful future. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth welcomed them with open arms, providing a safe haven and meeting their immediate needs.

Fateme, a young artist, found solace in her new surroundings. She painted a portrait of Pope Francis, a symbol of gratitude for the sanctuary they had found. Her story is a testament to the Enduring Principle of the Worth of All Persons, reminding us that every refugee carries a sacred story of resilience and hope.

As we journey with refugees during the Lenten season, let us recognize the Christ-presence in those who seek peace and stability. Just as Jesus, Mary, and Joseph fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath, refugees today seek safety and a chance for a better life. May we open our hearts and communities to those who have risked everything for a chance at a better life.
