My name is Grant Mangelson, and I am preparing to be baptized in Community of Christ this summer. My family has been going to our church since I was four months old, but I am not a member yet.
Being baptized means I am promising to follow Jesus. To me, following Jesus means to be kind to everyone I meet, help people when they are hurt, and being nice to animals and the Earth. Sometimes it’s hard to remember to be peaceful and follow Jesus, but I hope being baptized will help me remember. I am taking classes to prepare with other kids in the congregation. Learning about Jesus’s baptism helped me get excited about my own baptism.
I like Community of Christ because I can share my own ideas. During COVID-19, our congregation missed a lot of our normal holiday parties. When we started meeting again, I asked our pastor if we could have a party to celebrate all of the missed holidays. She said yes!

The whole congregation had a big carnival for church because of my idea. I also like to participate in Kids Book Club on the computer. We read stories that help us be more peaceful and braver, and we learn about breathing, art, and how to bring peace in the world. The things I’ve learned in book club help me calm down when I’m upset or scared.
One of my teachers, JoAnn, helped me to not be scared of baptism. I told her I was worried about being in the water and maybe drowning, and everyone looking at me. JoAnn helped me because she said there was no way I was going to drown, and everyone there would be celebrating with me and excited for me. It made me feel better and helped me want to be part of this church.
Going to World Conference is something I’m excited about. Last time I went, I was in the nursery, but this time I’ll be big enough for Conference Kids. Learning more about Jesus with people from all over the world is going to be fun! Community of Christ has fun camps, and I get to do cool things like fill the grape juice in the Communion cups and help set out the coffee on Sunday morning. I’m excited to be part of the church as an official member and learn more about Jesus.
