Reflect the Light

27 April 2024

By Nina Warriner of Bath, New York, USA

Give to the one who asks of you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

Matthew 5:42

I was driving home one mid-October evening. As I approached the top of a hill, I was met with the bold intensity of an almost-full moon that demanded my attention. I pulled my car over, turned off the engine, and rolled the window down, sensing the need to just sit, gaze, and take in this sight.

I couldn’t help but contemplate the glow of the moon. The sun itself was no longer visible, having disappeared due to rotation of the earth. However, the moon was reflecting an incredible amount of that light (from 93 million miles away) and casting a glow bright enough to allow me to see the outline of the quiet world around me.

Many times, the things of this world can overshadow the Light. Lives can feel as if they are in darkness. And yet, there is a moon. It reflects the sun when the light cannot be seen. We are called to reflect the light of the Son—to be the hands and feet and beating heart of Christ in this world; to bring light where there is darkness; to bear the fruits of hope, peace, and love to a wanting world.

The moon reflects the sun when it is overshadowed by the Earth.

Be a moon.

Prayer Phrase

“…my God turns my darkness into light” (Psalm 18:28).

Spiritual Practice

Light

Close your eyes and become centered with your breath. As you breathe gently in and out, reflect on the statement, “The light of God is in all things.” The light has a bright, soft beauty and radiates God’s healing love. The light of God reaches you and permeates you with a deep sense of peace. Rest in the light as it surrounds and fills you. Thank God that you live in God’s light, and it lives in you.
