Discipleship Goals

All people experience difficulties from time to time. Our daily burdens and concerns are lightened when we are part of a loving community.

When Apostle Linda Booth returned to her office in August after several ministerial trips, a colleague shared with her that he had felt impressed by the Holy Spirit to pray for her several days. She reflected that his prayers had come during a difficult experience that Linda had in her ministry. "This difficult experience had a spiritual outcome," said Linda; "the people attending the [camp] felt God's mercy and gave mercy to each other. In that stressful time we received God's forgiveness and were able to forgive and reconcile with one another....My colleague was part of that experience, even though he wasn't there. The Spirit joined him with me in family, and me with the people in sacred community."

Linda shared that "when we are truly claimed by Jesus Christ our relationships are deepened. We desire to share this precious connection with all people, witnessing of the Christ, welcoming others into our faith community. We more clearly recognize that the one and only thing that is vital to life is that we belong to Jesus Christ and to one another. We are truly 'family.'" (Herald, October 2003)

All are invited to experience that kinship within the Community of Christ.

Faith in Action

Children's Sabbath

Children's Sabbath is Sunday, October 19. Now in its twelfth year, Children's Sabbath is a day "for people of all ages and all faiths to learn about the urgent needs of children and the mandate in every faith tradition to nurture and protect children, to seek justice on their behalf." The goal is to generate new, long-term efforts to meet children's needs by raising awareness, serving children directly, and advocating on children's behalf. Community of Christ congregations have been involved in Children's Sabbath activities for several years.

The National Observance for Children's Sabbaths was created by Marian Wright Edelman, 1995 recipient of the Community of Christ International Peace Award for her work for children's rights in the United States. More than just a children's day, Children's Sabbath is about faith communities committing themselves to work for the rights and safety of children.
