Education Requirements

Bachelor of Arts with advanced related training in areas of social work, peace and conflict resolution, or racial justice and social reform and at least two years work experience with racial justice programs. OR; High School Diploma or GED with at least 4 years professional work experience with racial justice and social reform.

Experience Required/Desired

2 or more years of experience with at least 2 of the following:

  • Inner city social work
  • Racial justice
  • Immigration justice
  • Conflict mediation
  • Legal aid
  • Community organizing

Desired experience:

  • Networking with community and national organizations focused on social justice and peace initiatives and programs
  • Adult education

Summary of Position

Work with individuals, small groups, and existing congregations in the Chesapeake Bay Mission Center to support racial diversity and inclusion of all persons. Help congregations cultivate a culture of understanding and lament for local and national racial injustice and then to take action to alleviate suffering. Create a brave space that persons can seek out to help in understanding issues, terminology, and helping explore ways forward.

Essential Functions

Educate:

  • Facilitate educational opportunities for congregations, groups and individuals associated with the mission center on: 
    • Current and historical racial injustice in the USA and in our geographic area
    • Unconscious bias
    • Approaches to racially diverse and inclusive ministries
    • Identify and/or create educational resources for congregational use in worship and Sunday school
    • Identify potential change agents and train them as educational resources to further learning opportunities for individuals and congregations

Communicate/Message

  • Create and update guides outlining best practices, appropriate terminology, and exclusionary words to avoid, for use in creating inclusive content for social media, websites, and formal correspondence.
  • Internal: Create and support dissemination of information about racial inequity, diversity and inclusion among the mission center
  • External: Develop an impactful presence through social media and other mediums to effectively inspire racial equity, peace and justice.

Advocate & Challenge

  • Stand with the marginalized and amplify their voices
  • Speak truth no matter the audience
  • Be a source of support and action for those facing racial injustice.
  • Help identify ways to address the needs and concerns of populations who face racial injustice, marginalization, inequity.
  • Facilitate and coordinate Community of Christ participation and presence in local and community activities and events that uphold the worth of all persons and promote peace through racial diversity and inclusion.
  • Promote inclusion strategies within the mission center, including worship, reunion, camping experiences, and conferences, and in planning teams and leadership roles. Identify, Network and Connect
  • Gather information about what Racial Justice work is currently being done in CBMC geographic area and help those ministries receive recognition
  • Research and share information about the specific racial justice concerns facing each of our geographic communities.
  • Network with local community and national organizations which seek to advocate for the worth of all persons. Engage with these organizations to build partnerships to identify synergies and gaps that provide opportunities for Community of Christ engagement and outreach
  • Collaborate where appropriate with the CBMC Mission/Social Justice Ministries Team.

Required Trainings

Registered Youth Worker/Anti-harassment Training: New employees are required to be a registered youth worker with Community of Christ or be able to register within 30 days of hire date. Anti-harassment training is also required within 30 days of hire and then required annually.
