Community of Christ Gathers for International Conference

Representatives from Community of Christ congregations around the world will gather with 2,800 delegates and hundreds of visitors from multiple nations to participate in the Community of Christ 2005 World Conference. The Conference will be held June 2–5 at Community of Christ World Headquarters in Independence, Missouri.

Representatives of the church’s 250,000 members will travel from more than 50 nations to come together for worship, discipleship activities, and to consider church business. The main purpose of this year’s Conference is to provide for ordination of a new president and calls of other church leaders. Exploring the theme “Lift Up an Ensign of Peace,” Conference events will be simultaneously translated into French, Tahitian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

THURSDAY, June 2 – 7:00 p.m.

7:16p  National representatives from 54 countries will release each flag over the balcony railing as the name of the country is read. These flags will be displayed all week in the Conference Chamber.

Through the use of flags, let us celebrate our unity in Christ. Behind me, we display the church flag as a symbol of this unity. We also recognize the men and women of this earth who claim rich heritage as indigenous people. We honor those who claim heritage through tribal and ethnic communities, many of which are not adequately recognized by established national boundaries or by the flags which symbolize those nations. The indigenous and aboriginal peoples of the world are honored through the use of the earth flag. We welcome their presence within this community of faith.

The Eagle Feather Staff at the center of the wall behind me represents the Native Peoples of this Continent. It has been placed here by the Native American Members of the Community of Christ to signify the hosting of this Conference on their native soil. We are honored by the presence of this staff.
