Community of Christ
Theology is a way of loving God with mind, as well as heart. Theology seeks to better understand God’s nature and will. It explores how to apply knowledge about God to faith and life.
Theology is a journey of “faith seeking understanding” according to a definition credited to Anselm (1033–1109 CE). This definition roots theology in active faith, which asks probing questions about God. Such questions increase clarity about what we believe and how we should act.
Theology is a constant journey of study and faith (Doctrine and Covenants 85:36). As knowledge and insight increase and new questions arise, theology works to bring clarity and consistency to the church’s mission, beliefs, policies, and practices.
The Community of Christ way of seeking theological clarity has emerged throughout our history. It includes interaction with the broader Christian tradition, which presents much wisdom. It continues to be refined through our shared experiences of spiritual exploration and growth as a people who embrace Continuing Revelation and are responding to the call to “discern the divine will for your own time and in the places where you serve” (Doctrine and Covenants 162:2c).
Using the Community of Christ integrated approach for seeking deeper understanding of divine truth is essential whenever we examine theological and ethical issues. It is presented with a visual model by President Stephen M. Veazey in “Ways of Discovering God’s Will.”
