Call to Prayer

Good afternoon, and thank you
for joining us in prayer today in this place of sanctuary. Each day in
this sacred place, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will lift up the people of Burkina Faso in our prayers. Located
in western Africa, Burkina Faso gained its independence from France in
1960. Governmental instability during the 1970s and 1980s was followed
by multiparty elections in the early 1990s. One of the poorest countries
in the world, Burkina Faso depends on subsistence farming, but
population pressure and desertification in the north drive farmers off
the land. Recent unrest in Cote d'Ivoire and northern Ghana has hindered
the ability of several hundred thousand seasonal Burkinabe farm workers
to find employment in neighboring countries. While it is true that
Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, they are
known for their don't-worry--be-happy philosophy and reputation for
hospitality.
We greet you in God's name, and let us especially remember our Creator
who provided the goodness in our lives. I call your attention to the
lighted peace candle . . . as a symbol of our expectation of peace. May
the light sent from God shine in the darkness to show us the way to
peace. |

Let the church be admonished that the times
are portentous and demand faithful adherence to the faith and the work
of the church, that humankind may be blessed by and find peace in those
religiously social reforms and relationships which have been divinely
imposed as a great task of achievement. |

Prayer for Peace by M. Carolyn Dollins,
Hartshorne, Oklahoma |

Loving God, Creator of all that is, your name is
excellent in all the earth, your deeds are marvelous, your promises are
sure, your love is unconditional....and we are thankful.
For the thread of faith, gently weaving through generations, connecting
us to the past and carrying us to the future....we are thankful.
For those who show us the meaning of courage, the strength of endurance,
the measure of faith, full and running over....we are thankful.
For family, friends, and our many communities....we are thankful.
For art forms that express spiritual impressions of peace....we are
thankful.
We hear the voices of anger and hatred, but we see peaceful gestures of
smiles and handshakes....and we are thankful. In the name of the Prince
of Peace we pray. Amen. |
