Gathering in Silence
Call to Prayer
Lighting of CandleInvitation |
| |
We greet you in the name of God
who has called us to worship. Thank for coming to share in prayer with
us. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray
to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a
different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Yemen in our prayers. Yemen is
located in the Middle East. Yemen's modest oil reserves provide most of
the revenue, but it is the poorest country in the Middle East.
We light our candle as a symbol of our commitment to a just and peaceful
world. Let us listen for God's word of peace as we meet together for
this brief time. |

| Scripture Reading: Luke 4:16-19 NIV |
| |
Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been
brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was
his custom and he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was
handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach
good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the
prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” |

Prayer for Peace by Ann Zieger, Lamoni, Iowa |

O God,
We gaze into the night sky and see the creation you have made. You have
told us that your creation is endless. Our world is so small in your
creation. Sometimes we wonder why you have chosen to still work with us,
still love us. Yet here you are. We feel you. We see your handiwork. We
are aware of your presence in and through all of our world. And
sometimes we catch a glimpse of the magnitude of your love for us.
You show us that we have many choices to make. We need to choose
compassion over judgment, truth over expediency, mercy over fear, and
love over self-righteousness. Even though we have failed many times, we
have to keep trying.
Help us to see our choices clearly. Help us to not rush to judgment.
Open our eyes to see our neighbors as you see them and our ears to hear
those cries we can comfort. Cleanse our hearts. Then we can understand
better that love which you hold for the world. Then we can feel the
worth of all people in your sight. Then we can truly praise you. Amen. |

God of all that is, all that ever was, and all that
shall come to be, we praise you. We give thanks for this time of
remembering your goodness, your loving care, your guidance, and your
plan for creation to be at peace. |

This day, O God, we remember the nation and the people of Yemen. Be with
the peacemakers there, and may we all learn to live in harmony, one with
another. |

We would also hold up before you the concerns and the needs of the
people gathered here this day. |
