Audience: Youth (grades nine through twelve), young adults (ages 18
to 22)
Setting: classroom
Scope: A comprehensive six-unit program developed to educate high
school students and young adults in the fundamentals of sound money management
and the basic concepts of financial planning and personal financial
responsibility.
Purpose: To increase the financial literacy of youth and young
adults, empowering them to make positive and sound decisions to reach their
financial goals.
Summary: It is essential in our fast-moving society to have some
working knowledge of the fundamentals of basic financial planning. Today’s
teenagers and young adults will be required to take more personal
responsibility for actively managing their finances than people of any
previous generation. Each lesson is clearly laid out with supporting resources
and is designed to work with a variety of learning styles to reach as many
types of learners as possible. The instructor does not need to have an
accounting or finance background. While this does help, having a willingness
to learn with the students as you move through the course and utilizing
various local “experts” will go a long way toward making this a wonderful
learning experience for all involved.
