Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a service of the church?
Yes. The church and the Presiding Bishopric are fully supportive of this
service. As a part of the stewardship of temporalities our increased
education and skills at handling our financial resources is essential to our
well being as well as that of our families and Community of Christ.
Are you priesthood members?
Yes. As executive ministers for Community of Christ priesthood is required.
Are you available to meet privately with individuals?
Yes. We welcome the opportunity to meet with individuals in their homes or
other convenient place. This provides a sense of comfort and confidentiality
to the meetings. Meeting in member’s homes allows for quick and easy
reference to financial information and files.
Are you commissioned salespeople?
No. We are employees of Community of Christ and are compensated by the
church. We do not receive a commission for our services nor will you ever
receive an invoice for our services.
What services are available for congregations and branches?
We are available to conduct workshops and seminars covering many aspects of
financial planning. We cover such topics as cash management, insurance needs,
tax and investment planning, retirement, and estate planning. We also can help
individuals and local jurisdictions understand the process and opportunities
for creating and managing endowments. Our presentations can be adapted so that
the specific needs of each jurisdiction can be met. We offer one- or two-day
presentations or week-long classes in a reunion setting. Whatever the need, we
can adapt to meet it. When we come to your
area, we can assist in the worship activities as well.
How confidential is the information I share with you?
All information and discussions with you are kept in strictest confidence.
Do you sell financial products like insurance, investments, or mortgages?
No. Because we are not selling anything we can be objective when talking to
you about your financial situation. We do not give advice, we educate. Helping
you understand financial principles better will help you make better
decisions.
Can you assist us with a will or trust?
Yes. While we cannot prepare the will or trust document, we are available
to assist you with determining what you need in a will or trust. We can help
you understand which would be better in your unique situation. We can help you
find a local attorney to help you create a will or trust if you do not
currently have an attorney working for you. We can also advise you with
working with a national organization in the creation of a living trust if that
is your desire.
How much time is involved?
This really depends on the size of your estate and the complexity of your
plans. It helps to have done some preparation ahead of time. Having an idea of
your spending habits and what you have in the way of financial assets can be a
great help in discussing your concerns and preparing a plan of action. Usually we spend only a portion of a day with families we visit. Of course,
this can be shorter or longer depending on your unique situation. When you
contact us, we can usually determine this in advance so we can schedule the
right amount of time.
How much will it cost?
There is no charge from the church for our services. Costs you might incur
otherwise would be the workbook for the workshop ($20 USD) plus any
legal fees for preparing your will or trust or any other legal documents. In
addition, the services of any legal, tax, or certified financial advisor may
come with a cost attached. As we work with you, we will help you understand the
potential for these costs.
Are these services available in countries other than the United States?
Yes. Currently Canada is the only other country where the Estate and Financial Planning provides service. Due to the uniqueness of each
country’s financial laws there may or may not be a need to provide our
services in every country were the church is active. We are, however, looking
into the viability of providing this unique ministry in other countries and we
will announce this as it takes place.
