Spire Chamber Ensemble

In the first half of the concert, the Spire Chamber Ensemble will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, considered the apex of Russian liturgical music, as well as one of the greatest a cappella works in the choral literature. Also known as All-Night Vigil, this magnificent work is a perfect fit for the glorious acoustics of the Temple. The second half will include timeless spirituals and hymns.

 

David Pickering, Organist

David Pickering is Assistant Professor of Music at Kansas State University and organist at First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, Kansas. He is an active recitalist, having performed throughout the United States and Canada. Pickering’s three recordings feature the organ music of American composers Daniel Gawthrop, Alice Jordan, and Leroy Robertson. He has also authored articles on these composers that have appeared in The American Organist and The Diapason. His first book, The Auditorium Organ of the Community of Christ, will soon be published by the Organ Historical Society Press. Pickering is the editor of Leroy Robertson Organ Works, published by Wayne Leupold Editions and also reviews organ recordings for The Diapason.

He received bachelor of music degree in organ performance from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in organ performance and musicology and the doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance from the University of Kansas.

 

Jacomo Chorale

Now in its 30th season, the Jacomo Chorale presents a sacred concert featuring Schubert’s Mass in G and choral literature from several musical periods. The Chorale was founded in 1983 by Harold Neal and continues to delight audiences of all ages in Jackson County. The Chorale is directed by Dr. Helena Vasconcellos and accompanied by Mrs. Velma Tyson. In February 2013, by invitation, members of the Chorale will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

 

The Community Sings!

The rich 96-year history of Messiah performances associated with Community of Christ has included appearances at Kansas City’s top venues for the arts, including the church’s Auditorium in Independence.  This year, the Independence Messiah Choir will continue to sing performances of Handel’s masterpiece, in collaboration with the Kansas City Symphony and Chorus, in the city’s exciting new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Jan Kraybill is Principal Organist at Community of Christ and also the conservator of the Julia Kauffman Casavant at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Her annual Super Bowl Sunday recitals have introduced many to the joys of organ music on the organs at Community of Christ International Headquarters. Past years have focused on either the magnificent 113-rank Aeolian-Skinner in the Auditorium or the 102-rank Casavant in the Temple. This year, join her as she celebrates Super Bowl Sunday on both instruments.

 

Choral Festival with Eric Barnum

Eric Barnum is a choral director and composer who continues to seek new ground musically. He has worked with choirs of all types and styles, providing intensely meaningful experiences for both singers and audiences.

He was named the commissioned composer for 2007 Minnesota All-State Choir. He also received honorable mention in the 2006 Morton Gould Young Composer Competition and was a winner of the 2006 Vocal Essence Essentially Choral Competition. He was a recipient of both a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship and a McKnight Foundation Grant in 2005. He was the Composer-in-Residence for Kantorei, a professional ensemble based in Denver, CO for the 2005-2006 season as well as the Composer-in-Residence for The Rose Ensemble, an acclaimed early music ensemble in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in 2004-2005. Barnum received a JCCP Composers Grant (funded by the Jerome Foundation in association with the American Composer's Forum) in 2004. He also was the winner of the Chanticleer Composer Competition in 2003 with She Walks in Beauty, premiered by the world-renowned ensemble. 

This event will be a musical celebration of peace in the Temple, which is dedicated to the pursuit of peace in our world.

Gail Archer, Organist

Gail Archer is a GRAMMY-nominated, international concert organist, recording artist, choral conductor and lecturer. Ms. Archer's recordings span the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, a festive discography that highlights her musical mastery on grand Romantic instruments as well as Baroque tracker organs.Ms. Archer is college organist at Vassar College, and director of the music program at Barnard College, Columbia University where she conducts the Barnard-Columbia Chorus. She serves as director of the artist and young organ artist recitals at historic Central Synagogue, New York City.

 

The Thread Project

The Thread Project is a textile illustration of the fabric of society, woven from threads gathered from the daily lives of people from seventy countries on seven continents. Some threads reflect tragic events, such as the Cambodian Killing Fields and 9/11, while others celebrate joyous milestones.
